Arboretum programs nurture the public’s interest in land care and living in harmony with nature. We offer many free guided nature walks and garden tours throughout the year and also welcome groups who are interested in tours on a range of topics. Explore our many opportunities below.

Free Nature Walks

Free Sunday nature walks take place every week at 1 p.m. and last 60–90 minutes. Led by seasoned naturalists, these walks are a great way to learn about the land; plants, animals, and fungi; phenology; and ecological practices and concepts.

On the first and third (and fifth) Sundays of the month, we offer Nature Hikes geared for adults. These longer walks may cover some sloping terrain.

On the second Sunday of the month, we offer Family Nature Walks geared for families with children elementary age and younger.

On the fourth Sunday of the month, we offer Garden Strolls: shorter gently paced walks through the gardens. These tours are designed to be multi-generational experiences for learning about the Arboretum and are well suited for seniors. Routes are wheelchair accessible when weather allows.

Monthly night walks start before sunset and offer an opportunity to learn more about nocturnal nature. They are scheduled around the full moon and other astronomical events.

All of our free public walks are led by experienced naturalists. See the events calendar for listings.

Free Seasonal Birding Hikes

You can see more than 170 bird species at the Arboretum during the year. Join us for seasonal guided bird hikes in spring and fall. Bird hikes are free, but to help us plan please use this form to let us know you’re interested. See the events calendar for listings.
