UW–Madison Searches for Permanent Arboretum Director

Dedicated in 1934, The University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum is a field research and teaching laboratory comprised of 1,200 acres located approximately 2 miles from the UW–Madison campus. It also includes 15 outlying properties totaling 513 acres. Widely recognized as the site of seminal research in ecological restoration, the Arboretum includes the oldest and most varied collection of restored ecological communities in the world. It serves as a global source of knowledge of, and a model for, restoring ecologically sustainable relationships between people and the land through integrative, innovative, and collaborative approaches in science, stewardship, education, and public engagement.

The mission of the Arboretum is to conserve and restore Arboretum lands, advance research in ecology, and foster the land ethic. The Arboretum has a long history and tradition of research, teaching, and outreach excellence designed to meet these goals. The Arboretum Director is expected to continue this scholarly tradition by providing leadership and vision to cultivate the Arboretum’s leadership position in the fields of ecological restoration and conservation research, practice, and education.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a biological science, environmental science, conservation science, or other related field, and a strong record of scholarship in a field related to the mission of the Arboretum. Candidates must be eligible for tenure consideration in an appropriate department at UW-Madison. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Candidates also should have a demonstrated record of strong leadership and organizational skills, with an emphasis on teamwork and open communication; administrative experience that includes budget, personnel, public policy issues; successful program development as leader of an academic or similar unit; an ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies; and skill and experience in development and fundraising activities.
